xigua time!

ah what a few weeks. my last post was far too long ago, which can only signal that i'm doing awesome. too many posts and i would be worried ;)

but now i'm getting a bit of motivation from haoie who arrived this week. his blog/appetite/bright-eye to shanghai is proving a good push to get me back into the game. but my lack of photography skills still remains, so in the meantime, you can follow up on my posts with the photo's on hao's :)

OKAY. let's get started

1. dad's visit: my dad came to check out my digs for a weekend after a work trip to korea. we did the standard 2 day tour. pudong view, din tai fung, jing'an temple, hai di lao, hongqiao market, shouzhua bing...delicious. we had a great time and i'm glad he got a glimpse of my life here! here's a photo of him praying for me at jing'an temple. haha!

2. tina's farewell. tina, my good friend at work, is leaving shanghai and the gap to work with her family company (a famous chinese candy co). one of her last weekends here we had a game night, photos not to be published, and then aimee and crew cooked dinner and had a girl's night on aimee's roof! a lot of fun times but sad that tina is leaving. :( yet another goodbye in my short time here! this past weekend, we did a special little dinner at goga, tasty cali inspired fare that never fails. in fact i'm going again for my birthday in 2 weeks (not the subtle hint of my birthday).

below is their best dish, in my humble opinion. rib eye med rare with sauteed mushrooms, duck fat potatoes, red wine reduction, etc etc. very classic but very much appreciated here in shanghai. here we are, after the 2 bottles of wine, tuna tataki, lobster roll, duck confit salad, seared scallops, ribeye, lemon curd mousse, we headed to el coctel for shanghai's best cocktail(s). moscow mules all night long. gonna miss you t t!!

3. hao finally arrived to shanghai on tuesday and we had a lot to do. first stop. xigua!! after some disgustingly humid days, we cut a half-frozen one of these bad boys. hao has the photo reel to describe the immense happiness that ensued that day!!

hao also graciously put together a nice little home cooked meal, showing off his recent cooking masteries - home made pasta with mushroom filling topped with a creamy grilled corn and a pan-seared filet. accompanied by a glazed pork belly with edamame. hao - who are you?

we also went to a very delicious dinner at di shui dong, a popular hunan spot, to have some tasty and spicy eats. my fave is the special whole fish. garlicky spicy goodness. what's not to like.
finger lickin good.

4. after a delicious and simple dinner, we went to may's birthday party where the theme was 'nerds'. amazing. best theme ever. if i had a photo of the whole party, not sure if you would think it was a hipster group of azians or a harvard freshmen lecture. either way we very easily played along. mind you this picture was taken at di shui dong, in line for our table. talk about stares.

so. yes i'm still having a blast, eating my weight in food and forgetting to take pictures. work is crazy but life is crazier and i still manage to get 8 hours of sleep. this week, my sister and bri arrive for a whirlwind of craziness here, in beijing and in tokyo. beyond excited!!!! more food, shopping, crossing off wonders of the world...the usual.

more to come, let's say, in a month! :P lots of love, comment please!

ps. my next trip home is around july 15ish for about a week. despite my fun bloggings, i'm looking forward to speaking some english, giving some real hugs and eating a bagel. see you soon :)
